I-20 Program Major Update

Changing a Program Major

An F-1 student who is currently maintaining status and making normal progress toward completing their educational objective but who has changed their academic major, must submit an I-20 Program Major Update Form to receive their Form I-20 with the updated major.

F-1 students may not choose a degree plan in which the major coursework is exclusively online. For a list of online only programs and credentials visit: ACC Online Degrees & Certificates.

ACC F-1 students must submit their I-20 Program Major Update Form within 10 days of changing their major with an Academic Advisor.

Adding a Second Major

F-1 students pursuing a full course of study may choose to add a second major. A second major does not need to be declared in order to permit an F-1 student to take courses outside their program major. F-1 students are required to make normal progress towards the completion of the degree and should be encouraged to take courses in their declared major(s).

If an F-1 student plans to declare a major which is primarily online, the student must add a different primary major that has sufficient in-person courses to meet immigration regulations. Online only majors cannot be added to the Form I-20 or a student’s SEVIS record. F-1 students must maintain full-time enrollment every fall and spring semester with at least 9 credit hours of in-person courses.

Contact an Academic Advisor to discuss adding, removing, or making changes to the program major. Work with your Academic Advisor and submit the I-20 Program Major Update Form to ISO to receive an updated I-20 reflecting the program major changes.
